The long-standing problem of household waste being dumped indiscriminately across parts of Yaoundé is receiving renewed attention, with residents being encouraged to follow the proper waste-collection system.

Under the reported arrangement, households are expected to place their properly packaged garbage at accessible roadside collection points so that HYSACAM collection teams can pick it up during their rounds.

The message is simple: do not throw household waste into gutters, vacant plots, streams or along random streets. Residents are instead encouraged to keep their waste properly bagged and place it at the appropriate collection point for pickup.

This comes as Yaoundé continues to face challenges linked to poor waste disposal, including blocked drainage systems, unpleasant smells, dirty surroundings and increased risks to public health during periods of heavy rainfall.

Residents Have a Role to Play

Residents also have a role to play. Even with regular collection services, indiscriminate dumping can quickly turn clean neighbourhoods into illegal waste sites.

Authorities and waste-management teams are therefore expected to continue improving collection, while residents are urged to cooperate by disposing of their waste responsibly.
