AFRICA WANTS THE WORLD MAP CORRECTED

๐ŸŒ๐Ÿ‡ฆ๐Ÿ‡ซ AFRICA WANTS THE WORLD MAP CORRECTED

Itโ€™s official: Africaโ€™s true size is getting a new representation on the world map.

The African Union has adopted the Equal Earth map projection, calling for Africa to be represented more accurately and urging member states to update their educational materials accordingly. (African Union)

The initiative, championed by Togo, was taken to the United Nations, where the General Assembly on September 4 overwhelmingly backed a resolution encouraging governments, schools and technology companies to use more accurate map projections.

The resolution passed with 164 votes in favour, 1 against and 6 abstentions. (United Nations)

Why does this matter?

The widely used Mercator projection makes areas close to the poles appear much larger than they actually are. As a result, Africa can appear far smaller than its real size. In reality, Africa is about 14 times larger than Greenland. (United Nations)

๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ฒ๐ŸŒ Africa is not changing its size. The map is being corrected to show the size Africa already has.
