A 47-year-old British woman, Nusrat Osman, has been rescued in Malawi nearly a week after she was abducted in the southern city of Blantyre.
Osman was reportedly kidnapped on September 11, 2026, in the Mount Pleasant area of Blantyre by four men. She was subsequently held for six days before being located during an intelligence-led police operation on Thursday.
According to the Malawi Police Service, officers exchanged gunfire with the suspected kidnappers during the rescue operation. Police said the suspects were armed with an AK-47 rifle and a pistol.
The four suspects were shot during the confrontation and later died after being taken to hospital, according to police. Their identities have not yet been released.
A senior Malawi police officer, Deputy Inspector General Noel Kayira, was also wounded by gunfire during the operation. Police said he is receiving medical treatment and is in stable condition.
Osman has since been reunited with her family. Reports say she was taken for medical assessment following her rescue.
The motive for the kidnapping remains unclear. Police said the abductors had not contacted Osman’s family or authorities to make a ransom demand before the rescue.
The investigation remains ongoing, with authorities expected to provide additional information about the kidnapping and the identities of those involved.
The case has attracted significant attention in Malawi and internationally, particularly because of the circumstances of the abduction and the armed confrontation during the rescue operation.
