Cameroon’s state-owned telecommunications operator, Camtel, is expanding its mobile network with plans to deploy 245 new mobile sites across the country.
The expansion would increase Camtel’s declared network from 473 to 718 sites, representing a potential 51.8% increase.
The company announced on September 17 that a second shipment of telecommunications equipment had arrived at Zamengoe after being transported from China through the Port of Kribi. The shipment consisted of 35 forty-foot containers.
The Mobile Network Expansion project also includes plans to decongest 122 existing sites, strengthen metropolitan transmission capacity and expand power infrastructure.
Camtel says the project will place particular attention on rural areas, departmental and district capitals, as well as peri-urban communities where network coverage remains limited.
The programme is part of a broader effort to strengthen digital connectivity and expand access to telecommunications services across Cameroon. The first phase is backed by financing of about CFAF 44.8 billion.
The expansion is also expected to support additional digital services, including improvements to Camtel’s billing system and the development of cloud-computing capacity.
