Cooking Gas Availability Shows Signs of Improvement
The availability of domestic cooking gas is beginning to improve in parts of Cameroon after several weeks of supply difficulties that left consumers in Yaoundé, Douala and other cities searching for gas at multiple distribution points.
The Société Camerounaise des Dépôts Pétroliers (SCDP) said on September 17 that the situation should not be considered a generalized shortage. According to the company, the difficulties have been concentrated around certain distributors, while other marketers still have products available in Yaoundé, Douala and several other parts of the country. A new shipment of domestic gas has also helped strengthen available stocks. The SCDP reported that a new cargo was being unloaded at its Bonabéri gas depot in Douala, with the objective of supporting continued supply and distribution across the country. (scdp.cm)
On September 20, reports indicated that the Bonabéri depot had become the starting point for a wider distribution operation aimed at replenishing different gas sales points and improving access for consumers. (Ripostes)
The recent difficulties were attributed to several factors, including a 15% increase in national demand, reduced local production following the interruption of gas production at Bipaga near Kribi, delays in the arrival of some gas carriers at the Port of Douala and pressure on storage facilities. The situation had particularly affected households in Yaoundé and Douala, where consumers reported long queues and repeated trips to different sales points in search of available cylinders. (CAP News)
