East African Community Records $300 Million Trade Surplus in Second Quarter of 2026

The East African Community (EAC) recorded a trade surplus of approximately $300 million during the second quarter of 2026, according to the regional bloc’s latest trade figures.

The result represents a notable change from the $945.3 million trade deficit recorded during the same period a year earlier.

The improvement was supported by stronger export performance across the region, particularly in commodities and agricultural products. Trade between EAC member states and external markets also continued to expand during the quarter.

The figures point to increased regional participation in international trade, with markets including China and other African countries contributing to the bloc’s expanding commercial activity.

The EAC comprises several East African economies that have been working to strengthen regional integration and reduce barriers to trade among member states.

A sustained improvement in the trade balance could support regional economic activity by increasing export earnings and strengthening cross-border commerce. However, the region’s future trade performance will continue to depend on commodity prices, production levels, transport infrastructure and conditions in international markets.

The latest figures highlight the growing role of regional integration and cross-border trade in the economic development of East Africa.
