Cameroon Launches National Smart Cities Plan to Transform Urban Management

Cameroon has officially launched its National Action Plan for the Development of Smart Cities, in partnership with UN-Habitat, as the country seeks to use digital technology and innovation to improve the management of its rapidly growing cities.

The plan was officially launched in Yaoundé on September 8, 2026, during a ceremony bringing together government officials, local authorities, private-sector representatives, academics and international partners.

The initiative aims to use digital technologies, artificial intelligence and better data to improve areas such as urban planning, mobility, sanitation, land management and public services.

According to UN-Habitat Executive Director Anacláudia Rossbach, technology should support decision-making rather than replace it, while also helping cities become more inclusive and resilient.

The plan comes as Cameroon faces growing urbanisation and major challenges including inadequate housing, sanitation problems, traffic congestion and pressure on urban infrastructure. Yaoundé and Douala are expected to be among the cities that could benefit significantly from improved digital urban management.

A roadmap outlining priority actions for decentralised local authorities has already been presented, marking the beginning of efforts to move the plan from policy to implementation.

Why it matters

If effectively implemented, the Smart Cities Plan could help Cameroon make its major cities more connected, efficient, sustainable and responsive to citizens’ needs.
