More than 100 Malian soldiers were reportedly killed during an attack on a military camp in Dioura, central Mali, earlier this month.
Reuters reported on September 21 that two sources put the number of soldiers killed at between 120 and 130. The attack was attributed to Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal Muslimin, or JNIM, an al-Qaeda-linked armed group operating across the Sahel.
The Malian military has acknowledged losses and said it carried out operations against the attackers, but the precise casualty figures remain subject to conflicting reports.
The attack is the latest indication of the continuing security challenges facing Mali and the wider Sahel region.
