Nigeria’s Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, has been named among the 2026 Goalkeepers Champions by the Gates Foundation.
The 2026 recognition focuses on leaders and innovators working to ensure that artificial intelligence expands opportunities rather than deepens existing inequalities.
According to the Gates Foundation, Tijani is being recognised for his work in advancing digital transformation and strengthening Africa’s capacity to develop its own artificial intelligence solutions. (Goalkeepers)
Tijani, who previously co-founded the pan-African innovation hub CcHUB, has been involved in Nigeria’s efforts to expand its digital economy and build greater domestic capacity in emerging technologies.
The wider 2026 Goalkeepers Champions group includes leaders working across AI, agriculture, health, education, digital rights and technology policy.
The recognition places an African technology leader among an international group working on questions surrounding how artificial intelligence can be developed and used more broadly for social and economic opportunities.
As African countries increasingly invest in AI infrastructure, skills and policies, the development of locally relevant technologies and greater participation in the global AI ecosystem remain important issues for the continent.
