Cameroon Football Federation (FECAFOOT) President Samuel Eto’o is facing renewed scrutiny over a reported €567,570 payment connected to Cameroon’s friendly match against Russia in October 2023.
The Association of Amateur Football Clubs of Cameroon (ACFAC) has called for an investigation into FECAFOOT and its president following media reports concerning the payment.
According to documents reported by several media outlets, including The Times and Cameroonian football publication Camfoot, two payments—reported at €455,056 and €112,514—were directed to an account reportedly held by Samuel Eto’o at Qatar National Bank in Doha. Former FECAFOOT officials have questioned why the funds were reportedly directed to a personal account rather than an account in the federation’s name. They have also said they could not identify accounting or banking evidence showing that the money was subsequently transferred to FECAFOOT or recorded in its accounts.
Eto’o has denied the allegations and has publicly responded to criticism surrounding the payment, while FECAFOOT has previously challenged the circumstances surrounding documents circulated about the matter.
The latest development is therefore a call for an investigation, not a finding that Eto’o committed embezzlement. The allegations remain subject to verification and any competent investigation.
The controversy has nevertheless renewed calls for greater transparency concerning the financial management of Cameroon’s national football teams and FECAFOOT.
