Seven Ethiopian Armed Groups Announce Anti-Government Alliance
Seven armed groups in Ethiopia have announced the formation of a new alliance aimed at overthrowing the government of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed.
The Ethiopian Peoples’ Forces Alliance for Survival, announced on Sunday, brings together groups from several parts of the country, including Tigray, Amhara, Oromia, Afar and Benishangul-Gumuz.
The alliance notably includes the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) and the Amhara Fano National Movement, groups that previously fought on opposite sides during Ethiopia’s 2020–2022 Tigray war. (Reuters)
The groups accuse the federal government of centralising power and marginalising regional interests. They say they intend to establish what they describe as an inclusive transitional government.
The announcement comes amid renewed tensions in northern Ethiopia. The TPLF has recently reasserted control over Tigray’s political administration, while reports of clashes and drone strikes have raised concerns about renewed conflict.
The Ethiopian federal government has not immediately responded to the latest alliance announcement. Previous government officials have dismissed similar proposed coalitions as threats that would not be capable of overthrowing the federal government. (Reuters)
