Cameroon University Lecturers Begin Indefinite Strike Over Unpaid Allowances

University lecturers in Cameroon have declared an indefinite strike across the country’s public universities, citing unpaid research allowances and unresolved academic debts.

The National Union of Teachers of Higher Education (BEN-SYNES) announced the decision following an extraordinary meeting held on September 3, 2026. The union instructed teaching staff to suspend academic and research activities until its demands are addressed.

Among the grievances are outstanding payments under the Special Allowance for the Modernisation of Research, including amounts dating from the fourth quarter of 2025 and subsequent quarters in 2026.

The lecturers are also demanding action on outstanding academic debts, stronger social dialogue and commitments concerning university governance. The union says it has also been waiting for a response to a request for an audience with President Paul Biya submitted in January 2025.

The development could affect lectures, examinations and other academic activities across Cameroon’s state universities if the dispute continues.
