DR Congo Ebola Cases Pass 7,000 as Outbreak Spreads to Seventh Province

The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is facing its worst Ebola outbreak on record, with more than 7,000 confirmed cases reported since the epidemic was detected in May.

According to figures from Congolese health authorities, 7,022 confirmed cases and 3,398 deaths had been recorded by September 10. The outbreak has now reached seven provinces, after a new case was confirmed in South Ubangi, in northwestern DRC.

The outbreak began in Ituri Province, which remains the epicentre, before spreading to other parts of the country. Health authorities are particularly concerned about transmission in communities and schools, while conflict and limited healthcare infrastructure continue to complicate the response.

The latest outbreak involves the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola. Health teams are carrying out surveillance, isolation, contact tracing and infection-prevention measures to limit further transmission.

The expansion into a seventh province has increased concerns about the possibility of the virus spreading further across the region.
