AI Leaders Call for Caution as Tech Stocks Take a Hit
The global artificial intelligence industry is facing a new debate over how quickly advanced AI should be developed.
Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei has called for a slower pace of frontier AI development, warning that safety measures need time to catch up with rapidly advancing systems. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and Elon Musk have also backed calls for greater caution.
The comments triggered a sell-off in AI-related stocks on Monday, September 14. Nvidia fell about 3%, while several major semiconductor companies recorded larger losses. SoftBank, a major OpenAI investor, also suffered a sharp decline.
The debate is not necessarily a call to stop AI development. Instead, it centres on safety, independent evaluation and whether the industry’s rapid race toward increasingly powerful systems should be slowed.
For investors and technology companies, the question now is whether stronger safety requirements will temporarily slow AI spending—or become a new standard for the industry.
