The idea of the solitary genius is compelling, but much art has always been collaborative. Workshops trained apprentices, prepared materials, repeated designs, and managed commissions for demanding patrons.

Seeing the workshop does not diminish the artist. It reveals the social and technical conditions that made ambitious work possible. It also gives us a richer history of labour, skill, and creative organisation.
