Fast travel encourages lists. Slow travel encourages attention. A neighbourhood market, a bus route, a courtyard, or a conversation can teach more about a city than a checklist of landmarks.
Moving slowly also changes the ethics of travel. Visitors have more time to notice local businesses, listen to residents, and understand that a destination is a home before it is a backdrop.
