Digital archives are often imagined as large stores of files. In practice, their value depends on context. A photograph needs a date, a place, a creator, and a description. A document needs a clear relationship to the collection around it.

The most useful archive is therefore not always the biggest. It is the one that helps a reader understand what they are seeing and gives future researchers enough information to continue the work.
