An artist may paint the same landscape, figure, or object many times because each attempt changes the question. Light shifts, memory interrupts observation, and a familiar subject reveals a new formal problem.
Repetition also creates a record of attention. Looking across a series allows us to see not only the finished images but the artist’s changing relationship with time, material, and uncertainty.
