YAOUNDÉ, Cameroon — Four people have died following a devastating landslide in the Maetur Nkomo area of Yaoundé IV, after heavy rainfall hit the capital on Wednesday, September 16, 2026.
The incident occurred behind the Lycée Technique d’Ekounou, where a section of water-saturated earth collapsed and swept into nearby homes. According to reports, several houses were buried or severely damaged in the disaster.
Among the victims was a 36-year-old mother and her two children, aged 11 and 8. The fourth victim was identified as the woman’s sister. The family home was reportedly crushed by a large mass of earth and a concrete structure as the slope gave way.
The disaster has also left significant material losses, with household belongings—including furniture and appliances—buried beneath the debris. A nearby building was reportedly left dangerously exposed following the collapse of the supporting slope.
Emergency and rescue teams were deployed to the site to search through the rubble and recover the victims. Reports indicate that the four bodies were subsequently taken to different morgues in Yaoundé.
The tragedy once again highlights the dangers posed by heavy rainfall and unstable slopes in parts of Yaoundé, particularly in densely populated areas where homes are located close to vulnerable terrain.
As the affected families mourn their loved ones, attention is expected to remain focused on the safety of residents living in areas exposed to landslides during periods of intense rainfall.
